Did you know, years and years ago, Kilkenny city was once the Capital of Ireland. The Confederation of Kilkenny, also known as the Irish Catholic Federation was created to govern Ireland. The organisation created a green flag with a harp which are known as symbols of Ireland all over the world. It wasn’t the first time the harp was used on the flag, it was the first time they used the colour green.

The Catholic Federation

The Catholic Federation consisted mainly of Irish Catholic nobles, military leaders and clergy from the Irish Rebellion that took place in 1641. The Confederation created a Parliament in which they called the General Assembly. The General Assembly was an executive council called the Supreme Council and a military. It pledged its allegiance to Charles I. Charles was a follower of the Anglican Church. The Parliament was held Parliament House on Parliament Street. They formed the Parliament in 1941 following the aftermath of the rebellion. Their main aim was to try organise an Irish Catholic war against the remaining English and Scottish armies in Ireland and to control the popular uprising.

War

The Confederation started war with everyone. First against the parliamentarians (people who supported Oliver Cromwall) and second against the royalists (people who supported Charles I). Kilkenny remained the capital of Ireland for nine years until the parliamentarians under Cromwall invaded Ireland in 1649. Who would of known??
